Nowadays an enormous waste of food has become a major issue. This problem is largely caused by strict cosmetic standards and overproduction, and it can be tackled through government intervention and stronger community involvement.
One of the main causes of food waste is a rejection of „imperfect” produce. Today’s people refuse to consume food which is not ideal. For instance, an apple with some brown spot or not regular shape is often thrown to trash bin; though, it is fresh and delicious. In fact, people don’t like to eat again the meal which was made yesterday as they consider it as spoiled. Additionally, factories produce excessive amounts of food. Consequently, a big number of products directly ends up in landfills without ever been purchased.
There are several effective measures that could be taken to tackle this problem. First of all, government should start to demand forecasting and set limits, such as one family will be able to buy only 10 eggs, for example. Also, predicting the amount of food needed will help to prevent overproduction. At the same time, society has an important role to play. Habits of throwaway culture must be neglected. Society should start to control their purchases by creating shopping lists and strictly following them. This will help to avoid overconsumption and bulk purchasing. Besides, the surplus food can be distributed to people in need, reducing food waste.
In conclusion, an enormous amount of food is wasted these days. However, we can easily deal with it by responsible consumption and sustainable practices.
