Band 8+: Government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizens’ health rather than on protecting the environment. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

People have different opinions on whether authorities should allocate more funds to the healthcare system to prevent diseases or invest this money in environmental protection. I align with the latter perspective for several reasons.

While government spending on medical research undoubtedly brings various advantages, such as improving the quality of life, I believe the focus should shift. Medical research leads to the development of new treatments, vaccines, and technologies that can significantly enhance the lives of individuals suffering from chronic health conditions. Furthermore, prioritizing medical research can elevate a country’s standing in global trade, as successful medical advancements can fuel the growth of the pharmaceutical industry.

However, despite these benefits, I believe it would be more prudent to allocate funds toward environmental protection rather than solely for healthcare. Many illnesses stem from a damaged environment and sedentary lifestyles, both of which have substantial negative effects on our well-being. Additionally, we are witnessing an alarming number of animal species facing extinction. This trend poses significant threats, including the loss of biodiversity, global warming, and droughts. Even more concerning is the fact that, in some regions, water scarcity has become a critical issue, given that water is essential for shaping our world and sustaining life.

In conclusion, while investing in medicine offers numerous benefits, including advancements in various fields, I contend that prioritizing environmental protection is more urgent and crucial in our current state.
