In modern society, lots of governments invest much money in improving transportation. Therefore, there exists widespread concern over the view that governments ought to spend money on railways instead of roads. Personally, I believe that railways really deserve more funding from governments than roads for the following reasons.
To begin with, compared with roads, railways are worthy of long-term investment due to their superior capacity for transporting goods and passengers. To be more specific, one single railway train has more space and consists of more carriages, each of which has the passenger capacity of an individual road bus. And trains travel on more solid tracks, so heavier cargoes can be carried, especially products of irregular shapes, overweight industrial materials, and sensitive equipment, which are forbidden by road transportation due to size limitations or strict traffic rules. These larger capacities are contributions to development. For example, the Xinjiang railway, stretching east from Inner Mongolia to Xinjiang Region, transports cargoes of more than 100 million tons annually, which is an important part of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Furthermore, compared with road transportation, railway transportation can enhance the efficiency of traveling. To be more precise, modern passengers can check the timetables of the railway journey and buy tickets through smart phones, allowing them to plan their time in advance. The railways have fixed routes, significantly reducing the possibility accidents . And there is no doubt that railway train with stable speeds can reach their destinations on time regardless of extreme weather conditions or crowded situation. It is more convenient for passangers to travel between the cities and countries, promoting urban integration. As a result, railway networks boost the development of tourism. For example, one railway express brought 15,000 tourists from other places to Sichuan Province during the National day holiday,2025.
Admittedly, some people may believe that roads cause less pollution. However, the roads maintenance is more frequent which also contaminate our environment. With technological advancements, railways and steel tracks with higher quality can be environmentally-friendly. Therefore, the advantages of railways will become increasingly obvious for a long time.
Through the above analysis, railway transports have greater capacity, and it is more convenient for passengers. Accordingly, I am fully convinced that governments should invest money on railways instead of roads.
