Band 9: If people could choose between a life without working or a life spending too much time working, people would choose a life without work. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some individuals argue that if people were given a choice between a life of overworking and one without work, most would opt for the latter. Personally, I partly agree with this perspective, and curating lifestyles based on multifaceted facets is necessary for everyone.

Undoubtedly, a life without work can significantly improve both mental and physical well-being. When individuals are not forced to meet deadlines in the workplace, they have more leisure time to pursue health-enhancing routines, which help improve their well-being. For instance, engaging in extracurricular activities and sports allows them to improve their physical appearance, as well as helping to avoid obesity-related diseases. Additionally, this practice empowers them to have face-to-face interactions with other participants. These in-person connections permit them to expand their social circle, build solid relationships, and gain a sense of community. These factors are crucial to alleviate work stress and even treat psychological health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and even isolation stemming from working pressures. Compared to those overwhelmed by work, people in non-working lifestyles may enjoy a greater sense of peace and emotional balance.

On the other hand, I believe that there are some reasons that encourage workers to dedicate themselves to their jobs. Obviously, society is inherently a combination of various types of people with socio-economic backgrounds. Therefore, individuals with disadvantaged backgrounds may strive to gain a high salary, potentially alleviating financial burdens and improving the quality of life. For example, while high-income earners may only work one stable job, many low-salary individuals often take on multiple jobs just to make ends meet. As a result, the more time they spend working, the more money they get. Furthermore, overworking typically demonstrates enhanced work performance and high productivity, providing them with various prospects for career advancement and high-income job opportunities. These benefits enable them to gain socio-economic recognition and better prestige, which others in non-working lifestyles cannot possess. If they do not endeavour to work, it is difficult to reap the benefits that are mentioned previously.

However, there are some notable drawbacks stemming from both overworking and non-working lifestyles. For the former, working too much means that employees may have to work constantly without rest, making them fall victim to mental disorders and work-related strains. What’s more, workers can also be susceptible to vision-related issues, particularly myopia, as they have to watch the screen for a long time. Besides, if they spend too much time in their marketplace, this may foster a sense of isolation, substantially degrading their interpersonal skills, including communication and negotiation. For the latter, it is significantly challenging for unemployed individuals to gain financial security, which greatly contributes towards experiencing other essential services, such as healthcare, education, and entertainment. As a result, this lifestyle may lead to a decline in the quality of their life.

In conclusion, while the allure of a work-free existence is powerful, the notion that most would choose it oversimplifies a complex human dilemma. The decision is not merely a choice between leisure and labor, but a deeply personal negotiation between mental well-being and financial ambition, between personal freedom and a sense of purpose. Ultimately, the ideal path lies not in embracing either extreme, but in striving for a sustainable balance that aligns with an individual’s unique values and life circumstances.

Environmental issues are never easily resolved by a single entity within a short period of time. As far as I am concerned, with due measures done by the appropriate entities altogether, environment problems can be solved within a country by the efforts of its citizens.
