Band 8+: In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.Discuss both views

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is certainly true that large capital expenditures for the construction of new railway lines to facilitate high-speed trains between cities are considered necessary by some in several nations. Others think that the funds ought to be used to upgrade the current public transportation system. In this essay, I will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On the one hand, reducing travel time can be one of the advantages of spending on new railway lines for high speed trains. This is because high-speed trains can significantly reduce travel times between major cities, making it more convenient for business and leisure travelers. As a result, this could boost economic activities by making cities more interconnected. In addition, the construction of new railway lines can create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the short term. In the long term, improved transportation can enhance trade and commerce.

However, there are also several benefits of improving existing public transport. Cost-effectiveness can be the first one. What I mean by this is that upgrading and maintaining existing public transport systems such as buses, subways and trams are generally more cost-effective than building new high-speed rail lines. Moreover, investing in existing public transport can make it more accessible and reliable, benefiting daily commuters, especially those in less affluent areas who may rely heavily on public transit.

To conclude, in my opinion, a balanced approach should be taken. Namely, governments could allocate funds to both initiatives, ensuring the development of a modern high-speed network without neglecting the needs of daily commuters.
