In many countries all over the globe, the rural population is decreasing as the people living there are moving to cities. I personally don’t think this trend is necessarily positive or negative as there are pros and cons in equal measures as I have explained in this essay.
On the one hand, the rural parts of each country play a major role in that country’s economy. Agriculture for instance is a major contributor to GDP and is considered the driving force of economical progress in many of the developing or under-developed countries. If the rural population declines, then there is a smaller number of people working in agricultural sector. Therefore, if there is no one working on the lands, then adverse the financial effects of this can be felt not only in the country side but also in urban areas and big cities. So the the movers are essentially weakening that country’s economy by living behind their jobs in rural towns.
On the other hand, with the rise of globalization and corporate jobs in big cities attracting more employees while the modest positions in rural areas remain stagnant, it is no surprise that the younger population is leaving their small towns behind in favor of big cities. People moving to urban areas know that if they stay in their less developed towns, they would have to work long hours with minimum wage and no hopes for a promotion. By contrast, working in big cities offers many benefits, a higher and steady income, plenty of opportunities for promotions to a better position and job security. Top that with insurance and all the amenities that are available in big cities and you can’t deny that it is an appealing decision.
In conclusion, There is a global trend of people leaving rural areas in favor of cities which is resulting in the countryside’s population declining. I believe there are positive and negative aspects to this notion in equal terms. Therefore, I can’t say it is either positive or negative.
