Plastic pollution is a significant environmental concern nowadays. Many people see plastic as a serious issue and urge governments to implement policies to ban plastic bags. I agree that plastic materials should be banned due to their detrimental effects on the water contamination and climate change.
Firstly, many countries use oceans, seas and lakes as a dumping ground for plastic waste .Every year, thousands tons of plastics are dumped into the water. Plastic waste that ends up in oceans and rivers often breaks down into microplastics, which are then ingested by marine life. These microplastics enter the human food chain, particularly through seafood, leading to potential health risks. Research has indicated that microplastics can carry harmful chemicals, posing risks such as hormone disruption and increased cancer rates.
Furthermore, the production of plastic significantly contributes to climate change through the emission of large amounts of greenhouse gases. For example, the manufacturing and transportation of plastic products, such as bottles, require vast amounts of energy, primarily sourced from fossil fuels. According to a study conducted by Oxford University, the production and processing of 10 million plastic bottles release approximately 30 thousand tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. This substantial carbon footprint accelerates global warming, leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and droughts.
In conclusion, banning plastic usage benefits the global population in avoiding several diseases and in decreasing the severity of climate change. So, I agree with people who are advocating for decisive measures to protect our planet.
