Playing a sport is an arduous activity that strains both the body and the mind. To ensure success at it, some people believe that physical strength is the main element, while others argue that strengthening the psyche is far more important. In my view, both aspects are equally essential for excelling at sports.
Sports are first and foremost physical activities, requiring a well-built body that is able to handle the demands of training. Moreover, each sport has its unique set of skilled movements, which are performed by a special group of muscles in the body. For example, football relies mostly on lower limb durability, whereas for swimmers, it is necessary to have strong core muscles. This has led a number of people to believe that having a bulky physique alone is the determinant of success.
However, with the rise in mental health awareness, some people began to adopt another view that sees more importance in the psychological aspect of sports. They believe that character traits such as discipline and perseverance are what give sportsmen the stamina to train regularly in the first place. Additionally, high self-esteem and the ability to perform under pressure are personal qualities that are indispensable during tournaments and stressful matches.
In my perspective, it is impossible to be good at any sport if attention was given to physical strength alone, while neglecting the mental status of the athlete, and vice versa. If success is desired, attention must be given to both the body and the mind equally.
Some people believe that it is enough to have a body that tolerates the physical demands of sports, while others think that having a focused, relentless mind is far more important. However, being sound both physically and mentally is the surest way to excelling at a sport, and one cannot be achieved without the other.
