Band 8+: In order to study at university students are required to pay expensive tuition fees. Not all students can afford them so some people think that university education should be free for everyone. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Higher education fees are expensive and often unaffordable for many, leading some to argue that universities should be free for everyone, regardless of their background. I agree that university education ought to be free, as it would greatly benefit both individuals and society as a whole.

One compelling reason to eliminate university fees is that it promotes equal rights for all individuals, whether they are wealthy or disadvantaged. Currently, students from low-income backgrounds are often denied access to university due to their inability to pay tuition fees. This exclusion affects a significant portion of society and is inherently discriminatory, something that can be rectified by abolishing tuition fees.

Additionally, if university education were free, students would not need to work while studying to cover their costs. For instance, approximately three-quarters of students in the UK must work either full-time or part-time during their studies to pay for their education. By removing tuition fees, students could dedicate themselves fully to their studies, leading to better academic results.

Finally, free university education would benefit society in the long run by making higher education accessible to a broader segment of the population. This accessibility is likely to increase the number of educated individuals, which in turn enhances the pool of skilled and knowledgeable professionals. A more educated workforce would yield significant advantages for society as a whole, including economic benefits for a country that aspires to be prosperous and a leader in various fields.

In conclusion, providing free university education is essential for any country that values equal rights and seeks progress. The initial costs of free education would be outweighed by the extensive benefits it would bring to individuals and society as a whole.
