It is true that there is a tendency for females to choose arts subjects while males prefer to study science subjects in schools and universities. There is a reason for this and the trend should be changed.
In my opinion, the main factor which is to blame for this trend is the characteristic of different genders. To be specific, many boys tend to have innate talent for physical and mental endurance as well as practical skills, logical thinking and problem solving, all of which are required to tackle some difficult projects of science subjects. By contrast, it seems that girls are relatively sentimental and patient in comparison with boys so that they have the greater sensibility in literature or art as well as merits of handling subjects with a multitude of details. Therefore, males would be more likely to acquire satisfying academic performance in science subjects whereas females tend to be more fit for arts subjects.
However, there are several reasons why this tendency should be changed. From a personal perspective, one factor is that this trend would lead to the gender imbalance in admissions of different subjects. It means that students have less opportunity to interact with members of the opposite sex so that many graduates find it difficult to truly understand and get along with people of the opposite sex, which could exert a negative effect on their working and married life in the future. On the societal level, work is more demanding in the competitive society and all-round talents are increasingly needed in the economy. Students with single skill are less likely to satisfy the demand of the job market. Therefore, it is necessary for schools or universities to prepare students to be talents with knowledge of various subjects rather than those who merely focus on arts subjects or science subjects.
In conclusion, the characteristic of different genders is mainly responsible for the trend and it is necessary to change this tendency.
