Band 6+: In some countries, the government has tried to reduce traffic. For instance, they imposed a congestion tax during rush hour. Do you think this development is positive or negative?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In some cities, the governments have to adopt various methods to reduce traffic, such as imposing a congestion tax during rush hours. Although this trend has some drawbacks, I believe it is a positive development.

The main reason is that imposing a congestion tax is an efficient way to reduce traffic. Because some individuals who do not wish to pay for congestion tax will take public transportation instead of driving vehicles, which can reduce cars on the road. For example, some people with economic pressure prefer to take public transportation to commute, as well as some people choosing not to buy vehicles. Therefore, traffic can be reduced successfully. Furthermore, reducing traffic is benefit to environment. To be more specific, reducing vehicles means reducing greenhouse gas emission, meanwhile reducing the energy usage. Consequently, it can be seen as an efficient method to protect environment.

On the other hand, reducing traffic and imposing a congestion tax during rush hours have some disadvantages. Firstly, it brings a negative effect to some people’s income, such as the taxi driver. Due to the tax collection, more and more people trend to use by public transportation rather than by cars. So it is difficult for them to find passengers, and their income will decrease. Also, this trend might influence to people’s trip, who are living in the rural area and working in the city without complete public transportation. This means that their commuting costs might increase. However, I believe that these problem can be addressed by improving the accessibility of public transportation.

In conclusion, I believe that reducing traffic can be considered as a positive development.
