In ancient times, humans produced fabric to shield them from cold weather and insects. As the humans advanced, fabric became one of the most traded commodity across the world. Then clothing industry evolved and now people buy many clothes even though they don’t need them. In this essay I will try to highlight the effective causes and possible solutions of the problem.
There are a few reasons on why some people buy too many clothes. We live in a digital world and some people seek validation online. So, they purchase high brand apparels to post on their social media. Some people have a shopping addiction. Such people go on a shopping spree without giving it a second thought and buy whatever they think is good for them. The rich people, like many celebrities, have many designer dresses, even for a small occasion, fearing that media would notice if they repeat the dress. Due to these reasons and many more, clothing is just not a necessity anymore. It has become a fashion industry.
One thing we, as a society, can do is to create awareness campaigns for social media with the help of nature conservative groups which will attract a wider audience to listen on the harm of over cultivation of cotton and bamboo plants which use too much water and cause soil erosion. The schools can include a subject so that students get to know early about the wastage of resources on fabric production. Government should run TV ads to make the people aware on how the unused/rarely used clothes generally go in trash and additional funds need to be arranged to safely recycle millions of clothes yearly. But most importantly, people should adopt “Less is more” philosophy in their shopping habits.
In conclusion, it is a real problem that some people buy many clothes. However, the responsibility lies with adults to minimize the purchase of unnecessary clothes and set an example for their children and coming generation.
