Band 5+: In the past, sporting champions used to be motivated primarily by the desire to win a match or to break world records. These days, they are more likely to be motivated by prize money and the opportunity to be famous. What message does this send to young people and how does this attitude to sport affect the sports themselves?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the former days, sport champions were single handedly motivated by the need to win a competition or to break their records. Nowadays most champions are more likely to yearn for prize money and fame rather than the desire to compete.

To start with, many of the athletes in the sports industry have changed whether through motivation or lifestyle. Most of the famous athletes known today live quite a glamorous and wealthy lifestyle as a result of winning a prize in a competition, gaining fame and money from promotions, advertisements and merchandise, leading the general public and youth to believe that the world of being an athlete promotes a very hectic and hedonistic lifestyle. Compared to its former athletes motivation and lifestyle, where the previous athletes would desire and compete to be the best at what they’re good at while also maintaining a reputation of being humble and respectful for the younger generations to look up to.

In the present, many of the professional and famous athletes are highly paid for their work in the field but with the way athletes are gaining money from commercials and other promotional content this has paved a new goal in the sports community, that is to gain more money. But unfortunately this also means there are cases where money is gained illegally or unethically. For example the abuse and corruption of the league system by league higher ups profiting them instead of the players on the team.

In summary, the sports industry and professional athletes have vastly changed over the years. Turning it into a business field and a way to enhance your lifestyle, sadly this also leads to athletes living an obstructive lifestyle and promoting it to the public. Leaving the youth to believe that these negative lifestyles are what they should be aiming for. Whereas the sport industrialization can negatively affect many sport organizations. In the end, more regulations need to be added in the sport industry.
