Should we prioritize learning english, or preserving local languages in school? In my opinion, prioritizing English provides more advantages, while also not undermining local languages. Prioritizing English in schools provide a simplified system, a unified language would allow easier synthesis with international books and videos. In addition, learning English provides great international value, students who have the english language ingrained in their daily lives are able to integrate into international colleges easier, for example the latest addition of english taught classes have allowed students from all around to world to visit prominent universities in China while not having to learn the chinese language from scratch. That said prirotizing English doesn’t undermine local languages, for example in Indonesia, there are schools that prioritize English, but also provide civic education and bahasa Indonesia to preserve culture and language.
Learning local language is important for cultural identity. The preservation of cultures is one of the core goals of the UN body, ignoring language preservation would cross as a massive failure. In addition a nation’s identity is mainly reliant on their culture and language, for example the iconic French accent has reportedly been a strong point of pride for people in France.
In conclusion, learning the english language should be prioritized for international unity and simplicity, while local languages which are essential to providing national identity can be preserved by side lessons such as civic education and local language.
