The age-old question of whether or not we should abandon local languages and focus all of our attention on learning English is one which is near and dear to my heart. I strongly believe that if every school enforces English as a mandatory subject, necessary to graduate, the world will progress more, than if we decide to keep teaching local languages.
The main reason for this is that English is the language of the world. If you have a grasp on the basics of English you can discover the world, simply because English is spoken everywhere. This grants a sense of comfort while traversing the world, not letting you get lost in the wide variety of countries simply because you will always find someone who can speak English at least adequately enough for you to get around.
Now we can look “at the other end of the stick” – we abandon English learning in school and prioritize country-specific languages. That leads the world into a relatively dark age… An age where communication across countries is difficult, impossible at times, simply because everyone speaks their mother tongue and people can understand each other. Yes, we might save some languages from dying out as Latin did, but is that really a necessary step into humankind’s progression? Shouldn’t we simplify everything, even languages?
To reiterate everything I have said so far I believe that letting local languages die out is just a necessary step in life. It is going to do more good than harm. Having English as a common denominator will help everyday life tremendously and not only that, but it will make diplomatic connections between countries easier than ever before.
