Intercontinental travel through air has become increasingly common in today’s globalized world. It is often deemed that this mode of transportation have raised concerns about its detrimental effects on the environment, leading to some argue that it should be restricted. While I acknowledge that aviation contributes environmental degradation significantly, I believe that imposing strict limitations is not the most effective solution.
To commence with, there is no doubt that air travel leaves considerable carbon footprints. Aircraft emits large quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which accelerate climate change. For example organizations like Greenpeace have researched that excessive flooding during monsoons and drought during summers are the effects of aviation emissions which is growing rapidly due to the rising demand for international tourism and business travel. Hence, due to this in many countries health problems are also raised in the form of various respiratory diseases.
Furthermore, airports require vast areas of land, contributing to habitat destruction, deforestation and noise pollution. Airports situated near the residential areas causes disturbances to the patients in the hospitals and students studying in the schools. Also, if the airport is located near the residential areas it might be dangerous to the public if in any case accident happens. For instance, in the year 2025 Boing 787 airplane was crashed in the residential area of Allahabad just after 45 seconds of takeoff. Due to this disastrous crash more than 300 people lost their life.
However, restricting international air travel would have serious economic and social consequences. Many countries rely heavily on tourism as major source of revenue. Destinations like Thailand and Singapore depends significantly on international visitors to support local business and employment. A strict reduction in flights could lead to job loses and economic instability. Rather than imposing restrictions, government should focus on developing sustainable alternatives. Therefore, investment in fuel- efficient aircraft , carbon offset programs and providing land for airports away from the city could substantially reduce emissions without limiting travel opportunities.
In conclusion, although international air travel contributes to environmental problems, I disagree with its total restriction. Instead, technological innovation and stronger environmental policies offer a more practical and balanced approach to address this issue.
