Band 8+: it is becoming more and more difficult to escape the influence of the media on our lives. Discuss the advantages and disadvanatges of living in a media-rich society.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, escaping the media’s growing influence is becoming an impossibility. This is because social media has been integrated into every facet of our lives Things such as communication, entertainment, and how we receive information are greatly influenced by social media. Although there are benefits from living amidst a media-centered society, such as an abundance of information, I believe that this way of living has the potential to do more harm than good.

The main advantages of living in a media-oriented society are that people are more connected and everything is convenient. Take social media for example, nearly everyone uses apps like Instagram or Tiktok to converse with their friends over the phone, and apps like Youtube and Netflix offer users countless hours of content for their enjoyment. Additionally, people today also point to online media to know what is happening in the world. To illustrate, Google has a specific section that displays news and current events. This highlights how much the media has played an essential role in modern people’s lives.

On the other hand, a lot of these benefits come at a cost that people often neglect. One of the main drawbacks is being too dependent on its usage to function as a human being. A significant number of people are spending more time virtually, rather than communicating with their friends physically or doing fun activities outside the house. Furthermore, social media has made it so that people are so connected, it is often impossible for people to hide their personal life from others. For example, it is not uncommon to find stories of fans of famous celebrities that are trying to uncover their private information. In addition, news that is often found in social media tends to be fabricated and not rooted in facts. As a result, there is an abundance of misinformation surrounding the media.

In conclusion, living in a media-rich society offers numerous benefits, such as being able to entertain yourself and access tons of information at the tip of one’s fingertips. However, being too dependent on online media would lead to detrimental effects, such as having trouble connecting with people physically or discerning truthful media from hoaxes.
