Band 7+: It is better to learn the way People lived in the past through films and video records than written document. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Presently, there is a growing fascination with the lives of people who lived in the past. The debate on whether it is more effective to understand the past through films and video records as opposed to written documents is a complex one. While I partially lean towards this viewpoint, I acknowledge that both mediums have their own merits. I will elaborate on this stance with supporting reasons and examples in the subsequent paragraphs.

On the one hand, films and video records play a crucial role in providing insights into the lives of historical figures. This is primarily because visual media not only captivates the audience but also facilitates a deeper understanding of historical contexts. It is apparent that people are drawn to visual representations, particularly those depicting the lives of individuals from the past. For instance, historical documentaries and biopics enable viewers to swiftly gain knowledge about ancient civilizations and prominent historical figures. A social survey revealed that nearly 90 percent of respondents expressed satisfaction with using films and video records as a means to learn about the past.

On the other hand, written documents offer numerous benefits. Books, in particular, provide comprehensive and trustworthy information about historical figures and events. It is arguable that learning about people from history through books and manuscripts is more preferable and reliable when compared to relying solely on films. However, it is noteworthy that despite the advantages of written documents, today’s youth predominantly learn about historical figures through visual media. For instance, a recent survey indicated that only 10 percent of teenagers were inclined to learn about people from history by reading books. Personally, I find great satisfaction in reading historical books and gaining insights from them.

In conclusion, while the older generation may find it more beneficial to learn about historical figures through films, the younger generation seems to be more inclined towards gaining knowledge from books. Both mediums, however, have their own advantages and should be considered complementary rather than exclusive. It is essential to recognize the importance of utilizing a combination of films, video records, and written documents to gain a comprehensive understanding of the lives of people from the past.
