It is necessary for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at a young age. While some believe that punishment is essential for this learning, I completely disagree. I believe that punishment only creates temporary fear, whereas awareness and education through positive methods can effectively change children’s behavior.
Punishment is often seen as a quick solution by parents and teachers worldwide. However, this method tends to instill only a temporary fear in children without leading to a genuine change in their behavior. For instance, my cousin’s son struggled with respecting elders. My cousin used to punish him by hitting him with a scale. This created immediate compliance but did not result in lasting behavioral change. The child would revert to his old habits once the immediate threat of punishment was removed, ultimately damaging their father-son relationship.
Instead of punishment, positive reinforcement and awareness can be far more effective. In southern India, many parents and schools have adopted this approach with notable success. Returning to the example of my cousin’s son, we realized that punishment was ineffective. We then showed him an animated video explaining the importance of respecting elders and highlighting the consequences of disrespectful behavior. Over time, he internalized these lessons and his behavior improved significantly.
In conclusion, while punishment might create immediate fear, it often fails to produce long-term behavioral change and can harm relationships. Therefore, I strongly believe that raising awareness and educating children through positive reinforcement is a more effective approach to instilling good behavior.
