Punishment is a way of helping children distinguish between the right and wrong, and what is acceptable in a general societic setting. Punishment can be something that can either help children be a better version of themselves, or they can lose self-esteem, social abilities, and more. Depending on the type of punishment they receive, the children can be a better citizen or not enough even for themselves.

Depending on the background and the culture of children’s surroundings, they receive punishment based on the severity of their actions. In a school setting in typical India, if children fail to complete their school assignments in time, they receive a spanking usually with a scale from the teacher. In contrast, in western countries, children are sent detention where they can reflect on their actions and have time to improve their behaviour. I believe that children’s punishment should be aimed at behavioural improvement and character development instead of ones that would generate fear in them and contribute negatively to their growing minds.

In my opinion, children should receive acceptable punishments as would fit their behaviour, but should not have a lasting damage on their mental health and instead, have a positive impact in their development as human beings. For instance, if a child misbehaves during a lesson in a class, he should ideally receive detention to understand the lesson that he missed out on, and miss out on his general free time. Similarly, in a household if the children do not listen to their parents about something important, they should be sent back to their rooms without any forms of entertainment.

In conclusion, a punishment is only helpful for children if it can positively impact them early in their lives, if it can teach them something valuable, and if it improves their behaviour.
