In recent years, the prevalence of risk taking has surged largely driven by the potential rewards for it. Although this trend has facilitated possible opportunities for companies and individuals, it also gives rise to notable concerns, particularly in relation to resource drain and chance to lose jobs or revenue.
On the one hand, the practical benefits associated with taking risks are considerable. One major advantage is its ability to create chances to grow, thereby improving efficiency by forcing people and organisations to go beyond the status quo to find faster and better ways of working. For example, Around 2016-2018, NVIDIA invested heavily in AI-focused GPUs (CUDA ecosystem, data-center chips like Tesla) when AI demand was still uncertain. This strategic risk dramatically increased NVIDIA’s operational and financial efficiency, turning it into the dominant supplier of AI chips and massively boosting productivity, profit margins, and market value.
Nevertheless, these benefits are often overshadowed by several significant drawbacks. The most concerning issue relates to risk of getting unemployed, which can result in significant financial losses. In addition, the persistent pressure associated with this trend may adversely affect mental aspects. For instance, In 2022, thousands of employees at Meta (Facebook) were encouraged to pivot toward the metaverse, leaving stable roles in advertising and core products. When the metaverse project failed to generate expected returns, Meta announced mass layoffs, and many mid-level managers and engineers lost their jobs. As a result, some workers – especially those who had relocated or taken mortgages based on their high salaries – struggled financially, facing debt, delayed rent payments, and difficulty finding equally paid employment during the tech downturn.
In conclusion, while risk taking presents substantial advantages in terms of potential gains, its ability to cause unemployment or significant financial losses should not be underestimated. Overall, I believe that this trend can be beneficial, provided that risk management is maintained.
