Band 8+: It is important to give children the chance to act independently and make their own decisions from early age. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this idea?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that it is essential to encourage children to be independent in order to develop their ability to make decisions from an early age. While I agree that it is vital for children to become self-reliant, I also believe that many of them are not emotionally or mentally prepared to make important decisions without parental guidance, which can lead to negative consequences.

To begin with, becoming an independent individual is a crucial part of a child’s development, as it allows them to learn how to think critically and act responsibly. In today’s world, abilities such as quick problem-solving and open-mindedness are highly valued by many leading companies, making analytical and decision-making skills increasingly important in the job market. Therefore, these skills are not only essential for personal growth but also for future academic and professional success. Moreover, many parents are advised to encourage their children to make certain decisions on their own, as this may help them learn through real-life experiences. For example, allowing children to manage their own budget can teach them how to allocate money effectively, which is an essential life skill for financial independence in adulthood.

On the other hand, many children lack the maturity required to make complex decisions related to education, finances, and other important aspects of life. Granting them too much responsibility and freedom at a young age can result in poor choices, increased frustration, or even mental fatigue. Consequently, children who are not emotionally equipped to make sound decisions may become more susceptible to psychological issues, such as anxiety, depression, or insomnia. Thus, excessive independence can be harmful, as it may place undue pressure on children and potentially lead to a range of health-related problems.

In conclusion, although I agree that encouraging children to make decisions independently is important for developing critical thinking, I believe that a balanced approach with limited independence is necessary to prevent stress and support their overall well-being.
