Some people believe that the priority of scientific development is to improve human lives. However, I believe that there are other fields that are equally or even more important, such as nature preservation and space exploration.
It is undeniable that scientists, businesses, and governments are working towards creating a better life through continuous innovation. In today’s technology and information-driven world, we enjoy the convenience brought by science, from smartphones to laptops, air conditioners to Teslas, and mobile payments to polyester jackets. Almost every aspect of our lives has been touched by these advancements. The demand for convenience and comfort drives large businesses to invest significant time and money in developing ‘life-changing’ products. But is this level of consumerism really necessary, or is it just a guise for excess?
On the other hand, human life is just a small part of the larger ecosystem on our planet. As stewards of the Earth, we should not selfishly destroy the environment and ecology for our own gain. Instead, we can harness emerging high technology to protect the land and ocean environments. For instance, a recent incident where the Japanese government disposed of nuclear waste in the Pacific Ocean not only polluted coastal areas but also caused harm to marine life. This decision endangered all living beings. Imagine if there was a system capable of filtering, recycling, and reusing nuclear waste – how many lives could be saved, and how many radiation-related illnesses could be prevented. Isn’t this a more significant invention for improving people’s lives?
Moreover, turning our attention to the frontiers of the Earth, we encounter the vast world beyond our own – outer space, where infinite resources and potential solutions to issues like overpopulation and climate change may exist. With limited resources on Earth that will eventually be depleted, it is crucial to develop technologies for space travel and establish space stations for the future. Even without considering the exploitation of space, pure exploration is a dream shared by all human beings. Science fiction often speculates about higher civilizations in space. If this is true, the goal of science should be focused on the long-term and the broader horizon.
