Band 8+: It is more important to spend public money on promoting a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent illness than to spend it on treatment of people who are already ill. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is a prevailing notion in contemporary society that allocating public funds to promote a balanced and healthy lifestyle for the general populace should take precedence over using these funds to treat individuals afflicted with diseases stemming from an unhealthy lifestyle. In my view, channeling national budgets towards healthcare programs aimed at assisting ailing individuals would yield greater practical benefits for both long-term treatment and prevention.

Undoubtedly, when the government allocates state finances to cultivate healthier communities through initiatives such as communication campaigns and public education on health awareness, there can be long-term advantages. For instance, by adopting a balanced lifestyle with regular exercise, individuals become more conscious of safeguarding their health, thereby reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases like obesity, gout, cardiovascular and respiratory ailments, as well as psychological disorders linked to high-fat diets and the use of addictive substances. However, adhering to an unhealthy lifestyle is much easier than forsaking it. For instance, although the government endeavors to promote healthy eating and discourage smoking and drug consumption through posters, these efforts often have limited impact as people perceive them merely as decorative displays rather than heeding their messages. Moreover, seminars and talk shows on nutrition and lifestyle predominantly focus on the benefits of healthy living, neglecting the crucial aspect of eliminating unsanitary factors from people’s lives. It is evident that despite concerted efforts by governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote healthier communities, the desired efficacy has not been achieved, consequently failing to aid patients struggling with these illnesses. Paradoxically, the incidence of such diseases continues to rise, burdening patients with exorbitant hospital costs without any relief from community funds.

Furthermore, my stance is reinforced by the fact that treating individuals already afflicted with diseases addresses immediate issues, particularly the exorbitant medical expenses stemming from sedentary lifestyles and substance abuse, such as cancer, dyslipidemia, and obesity. These costs are often unmanageable, and not all individuals can afford them even with healthcare insurance. Government-provided support packages derived from public funding would greatly assist disadvantaged individuals grappling with illnesses, engendering a profound impact. For instance, when patients receive financial assistance for medical treatment from local authorities, they develop a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the value of health. Upon recovery, these individuals can become advocates for overcoming illnesses, influencing their relatives and acquaintances to embrace healthy living and prioritize health. Consequently, enhancing public awareness of health and reducing disease incidence in the long run, while also bolstering trust in the government, proves more pragmatic than efforts solely focused on promoting active lifestyles with limited impact on the populace.

In conclusion, while some advocate for promoting a healthy lifestyle for the entire population as an efficacious approach, I firmly believe that addressing the health issues of those afflicted with diseases is a more comprehensive approach. This method not only eliminates the need for expenditures on communication campaigns and seminars but also garners public trust in the government. Moreover, it demonstrates greater compassion by aiding individuals facing financial constraints in meeting hospital and treatment expenses, in stark contrast to endeavors with negligible effects.
