There is an ongoing debate about whether technological advancements in the twenty-first century have provided people with more free time, with some arguing that these innovations have indeed increased leisure opportunities. While I partly agree with this opinion, I firmly believe that people today are busier than ever due to various demands on their time.

On the one hand, advocates for the idea that technology has created more free time highlight two primary reasons. Firstly, technological advancements have significantly improved efficiency and productivity in various sectors. For instance, automation and Al in industries have reduced the need for human labor in repetitive tasks, thereby freeing up time for leisure activities. An example of this is seen in manufacturing, where robotic systems handle tasks that used to require substantial manual effort, allowing workers to enjoy shorter workweeks and more downtime. Secondly, digital communication tools have made it easier for people to manage their time. This flexibility is illustrated by the rise of remote work and telecommuting due to the widespread of Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Team, which facilitate efficient communication without the need for lengthy commutes, enabling individuals to balance their work and personal lives more effectively.

On the other hand, I contend that despite these technological advancements, people today have less free time due to two key factors. Firstly, the proliferation of smartphones and the internet has eradicated the boundaries between work and personal life. This constant connectivity ascends an “always-on” culture where employees are compelled to respond to work communications incessantly, even outside conventional working hours. This pervasive expectation significantly diminishes true leisure time, as evidenced by numerous studies highlighting the increase in work-related stress and the reduction of free time. Secondly, the demands of modern life, including the need for continuous learning and skill development, have also contributed to busier schedules. The fast-paced nature of technological change means that individuals must constantly update their knowledge and skills to remain competitive in the job market. Without mastering new technologies, many face the prospect of unemployment, particularly in industrial sectors reliant on cutting-edge machinery.

In conclusion, although technological advancements have improved efficiency and provided some flexibility in managing time, I still hold my view that people today have less free time due to the constant connectivity and demands for continuous learning.
