The question of whether with advancements in technology, people are supposed to have more leisure time than before has long been a topic of debate. I personally support the concept of technological developments can increasingly be attributed to increasing free time.
Technological devices have significantly contributed to increase the amount of free time available for many people. There are blend of compelling reasons. First of all, advanced technologies and automation reduces the time that is expected to spend on manual labour, such as factories and agriculture, allowing people to keep their nose on their assignments. When it comes to workplace, computers, artificial intelligence and automated machines enable employees store more easily than in the past. Consequently, it increases work-productivity and assist staff to save more time. This is exemplified by automated accounting software. In the past, accountants had to manually calculate ledgers and organize physical files, a process that took weeks of intense labor. Today, AI-driven programs can process thousands of transactions in seconds with perfect accuracy, allowing financial professionals to finish their core duties early and enjoy longer periods of rest or professional development.
Another inevitable factor contributing to this opinion is the rise of high-speed internet connection and communication platforms, such as remote desktop software, external monitors, headsets and microphones, has enabled telecommuting, which eradicates the requirement of daily commuting and traditional working styles. In the past, millions of workers spent several hours each day stuck in traffic or on public transit just to reach their offices. By using tools like Zoom, Slack, and cloud-based workspaces, employees can now perform their duties from home. For many, this means the ability to start their day later, spend more time with family, or engage in physical exercise, all of which were difficult to manage when a two-hour round-trip commute was mandatory. Take Silicon Valley tech firms as a notable example where many have adopted permanent ‘work-from-home’ policies, which not only grant employees back nearly ten hours of their week previously lost to highway congestion, but also allow them to live in quieter, more affordable areas, even far from the city center.
To sum up, the modernization of technology in recent decades has fundamentally transformed how we live and work. By automating labor-intensive tasks and enabling distance employment, these advancements have presented people more spare time to strengthen family bonds and pursue personal interests, proving that technology is a main driver of increased leisure.
