Life expectancy has significantly increased across the world in recent decades. It is believed that growing number of elderly citizens leads to problems for government, whereas other people argue that society benefits from having them. Even though there are drawbacks to the presence of larger proportion of aging people, I believe that this situation has more positive aspects than negative ones.
One crucial issue caused by population aging is the shortage of working age population. The rising number of senior citizens contributes to the decline of young specialists entering the workplaces, which results in diminishing in productivity and interception of economic growth. For example, in countries like Japan where the majority of population is elderly, slower economic development and struggles in sustaining industries such as manufacturing and healthcare is atributed by the scarcity of young professionals. Therefore, there is might be a link between ageing population and economic slowdown or serious challenges for governments.
On the other hand, senior citizens community maintains a huge role in keeping the society functioning in the way that they tend to share their personal experiences with younger generations. Furthermore, in terms of connection between generations, elderly tend to preserve cultural traditions and pass moral values. For instance, in eastern countries grandparents take a great part in children upbringing, dedicating a huge portion of their lives to their families, that includes a help to adults with childcare and maintenance house chores. Therefore the aging people should not be only observed as a burden but should be considered as a valuable resource for society.
In conclusion, although an increased life expectancy might lead to some negative consequences, there is still a merit because senior citizens significantly contribute to social aspects of the community that people live in.
