As population exponentially grows, we are becoming witnesses of sprawling cities and urban areas. This fast growth is accompanied by various problems following this development. Evidently, ecological problems and traffic challenges are the main negative repercussions young people are facing with. Both problems and possible solutions will be scrutinised before formulating a balanced conclusion.
To begin with, a doomsday scenario for the environment foresees our destiny as a world choked with pollution and young people are already coming across this reality. The main factors exerting severe pressure on ecological sustainability are carbon dioxide emissions from the burning fossil fuels, greenhouse effect, finite resources and climate change on top of it all. In everyday life, people’s health experiences the consequences of polluted air, and contaminated water paying their price for modern technological advances of contemporary world.
Additionally, the expanding cities put extra pressure on transport infrastructure which in turn leads to problems for commuters and regular citizens. For example, there is no person who would not deal with the inconveniences of packed trains during a rush hour, traffic gridlock and lengthy tailbacks. As a result, exhaust emissions go beyond certain standards polluting the atmosphere.
Fortunately, there are still possible ways to withstand the adverse effects of globalisation. Firstly, to prevent ecological damage and threat to finite resources people can exercise moderation in energy consumption, use renewables, think about food miles, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by cutting out unnecessary journeys. Secondly, to eliminate the traffic congestion it’s worth restricting private car use in a city centre, encouraging car-sharing programs and park-and-ride schemes.
In sum, the growth of major cities , that moves in tandem with the population growth, creates some negative effects people are forced to endure. However, under closer consideration, it’s clear that these consequences may be preempted by taking timely action.
