These days, there is a controversial debate about whether living standards are worth prioritizing in economic improvement over the erosion of substantial social traditions. In this essay, I will analyze the merits and demerits of the issue of whether the need for economic growth surpasses the importance of social values, while acknowledging that governments should balance both elements to establish a just and prosperous society.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that wealth is vital in all countries, since it can solve numerous problems, but social norms also play an important role in shaping individuals’ characters and viewpoints, which are necessary in maintaining a stable and well-functioning society. Moral values are so underestimated that their erosion causes a significant rise in the number of crimes, causing a chaotic and unstable society. In addition, this especially has a bad impact on teenagers and leads to an increase in juvenile illegal activities, directly impacting the future growth of the public. Besides, indifferent attitudes in individuals are the next alarming result, when people prioritize individualism in lifestyle and display cold-hearted behavior toward each other, causing fragile community connections. Moreover, due to rapid international integration, customary and ritual values can be easily replaced by other traditions, especially when people abandon them. As a result, they will develop feelings of neglect and damage the cultural identity of a country.
On the other hand, despite its disadvantages, economic development still brings enormous benefits. Firstly, infrastructures can be improved, which means citizens do not have to worry about the lack of schools or healthcare facilities or public transportation. This aspect is very essential for the improvement in quality of life, meeting all individuals’ requirements and leading to a fulfilling and satisfied society. Secondly, more job opportunities are broadened for employees, tackling the unemployment issue. Plus, individuals not only have a job but they also have more chances to work in environments and careers in which they are interested, because of the emergent and diverse working fields that only developed countries can obtain.
In conclusion, both economic development and social values must be achieved simultaneously to build a well-functioning society.
