It is observed that art has always been an important part of human society. Arts plays a significant role in expressing ideas, emotions, and culture. Throughout history, art has reflected the values and beliefs of different societies. In modern society there is a debate that arts should be censored. This essay will discuss the main reasons why arts should be censored for human society. In my views, I strongly disagree with this view.
To begin with, the arts are fundamental to our humanity; they ennoble and inspire us, fostering creativity and beauty. In a free society, individuals should be able to expose themselves to any form of cultural medium. It is the free-thinking citizen, rather than an authoritarian state, who should choose what culture deserves their attention. For example, organizations should be allowed to display any painting without fear of government repercussions. To assume that humans will simply “copy” what they see on screen is a negative interpretation that robs individuals of their moral agency. In a fair society, we must hold individuals responsible for their actions rather than blaming the art they consume.
Moreover, it is not the purpose of art to make individuals feel comfortable; in fact, the opposite is often true. Challenging artworks, such as murals depicting social inequality, serve as vital tools for representing historical truths. Only by witnessing such controversial art is it possible to understand society’s flaws and where improvement is required. Censoring “uncomfortable” art only hinders our collective intelligence and social development.
In conclusion, a free society must allow individuals to decide what culture to receive and create. Embark on the road to censorship and it’s impossible to deviate. Nothing deserves to be censored because it is offensive, causes controversy, or creates a debate. Rather, these characteristics should be at the heart of an artistic institution to extend the discussion and further intelligence.
