Band 6+: Many People believe that the best response to high level of violent crime is to increase the length of prison sentences. Others believe that long prison sentences do nothing to prevent crime. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

In response to frequent violent crimes, some people assert that the length of prison sentences needs to be increased. Nevertheless, there are those who are oppsed to this strategy and claim that long prison sentences does not work efficiently. From my perspective, instead of focusing on the length of the prison, the top priority needs to be the mental health of potential criminals and prisoners to decrease levels of serious crime.

Some individuals might argue if poeple are supposed to stay in jail for a much longer time for a violent crime, they might refrain from commiting crimes in the first place, being concerned about their future. Considering that people could waste time for years for their crime, it can be obvious that some people might stop huge crimes and levels of violent crime would be improved.

However, some potential criminals plan their crime elaborately, and even try to escape from prison once being caught. They might not find it problematic how long their sentence is. This means that long sentences does not make any beneficial effects.

In my opinion, long prison sentences could cost hugely and mental health caring can act as a precursor to making levels of serious crimes lower. The mental heath of criminals and potential criminals is often determined by how effectively others communicate with them. As a case in point, lawyers in Osaka, are forced to be trained as psychology consultants as well, leading to the lowest crime rate by previous criminals in Japan. They not only assist people in prison but also play a vital role in supporting young children who have lost their parents, who usually are more likely engage in violent crimes. Given that the case in Osaka has been successful, mental health consulting should make a difference as a response to issues with sentences for violent crimes.

To conclude, although long jail sentences might come with some benefits, I contend that it is important to address this problem by supporting people’s lives in terms of mental health. It is imperative that governments or cities need to take effective methods to treat with the issue.
