Many people believe that international tourism damages local cultures, while others argue that it promotes cultural exchange. Both views have merit, and this essay will discuss each perspective before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, some argue that international tourism can negatively affect local cultures. When large numbers of tourists visit a place, local traditions may become commercialised or performed only to entertain visitors rather than to preserve cultural identity. For example, traditional ceremonies in Bali are sometimes modified to suit tourists’ schedules and expectations, which can reduce their authenticity and spiritual meaning. Additionally, tourism can encourage local residents to adopt foreign habits, language, and consumption patterns, gradually eroding their own cultural practices. In extreme cases, cultural sites may be damaged due to overcrowding and inappropriate tourist behaviour.
On the other hand, supporters of international tourism believe that it plays a vital role in promoting cultural understanding. When people travel abroad, they are exposed to different lifestyles, customs, and values, which can broaden their perspectives and reduce prejudice. Local communities can also benefit from sharing their traditions with visitors, as it encourages pride in cultural heritage and provides opportunities for education. Furthermore, tourism generates economic income that can be used to protect cultural sites, restore historical buildings, and fund cultural festivals. For instance, revenue from tourism in Kyoto has helped preserve temples and traditional neighbourhoods.
In my opinion, although international tourism may cause some cultural challenges, its benefits outweigh its drawbacks if it is managed responsibly. Governments and local communities should implement rules to protect cultural heritage, limit visitor numbers in sensitive areas, and promote respectful behaviour. At the same time, they should encourage authentic cultural experiences that allow both tourists and residents to learn from one another.
In conclusion, while international tourism can sometimes harm local cultures, it also offers opportunities for cultural exchange and preservation. With proper management, tourism can enrich both visitors and local communities without compromising cultural identity.
