Band 7+: Many people believe that university students should study a full range of subjects, instead of some specific subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Deciding which subjects are essential for university students is often a contentious issue. In my view, I believe that students should prioritize crucial subjects to achieve higher performance and save both time and money rather than focusing on those that are not relevant.

Studying only necessary subjects proves to be cost-effective. Higher education entails expenses, and students must bear the costs associated with the required credits. By opting for fewer courses, students can significantly reduce their tuition expenses. Moreover, a streamlined course load leads to a shorter time to graduation. Consequently, focusing on essential subjects enables students to optimize their academic journey and minimize financial burdens simultaneously.

Focusing on specific and important subjects not only proves to be economical but also enhances undergraduates’ academic performance. Many students find certain subjects, those that are not directly related to their majors, quite daunting to learn. For example, architecture students at HCM University of Technology do not spend much time on the subject called Earth Science, which generally discovers the origins and composition of the universe and Earth. As a result, they choose to overlook the subject, which often leads to lower GPAs. Eliminating these poor scores results in higher GPAs. While some may argue that reducing the number of subjects does not necessarily decrease the difficulty level, I believe that the extra time gained from not studying irrelevant subjects, coupled with the enthusiasm for learning about their interests, will inspire students to put in more effort and achieve better scores.

For the reasons mentioned above, I believe that undergraduates should focus on specific subjects to save time and money and optimize their performance.
