Band 7+: Many people say that though nowadays there are more people, especially the young, doing volunteer work, they do it just because of following the trend, not for their own interest or for the benefits of the community. To what extent do you agree with the statement above?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s circumstances, the growing tendency of youngster engaging in outreach programs work are often attributed to the influence of digital platform and societal expectations, triggering distinctive viewpoints surrounding this idea, one of which is that many of these individuals volunteer not out of genuine dedication, but rather because they are following the latest trends. From my insight, regardless of social pressures and external triggers playing a role, this view doesn’t holistically capture the complexity of why adolescences volunteer.

On one hand, it is irrefutable that social media has brought about a surge in visibility for charitable service, as the proliferation of platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook frequently showcase volunteer efforts, highlighting influencers and celebrities involved in charity work or raising charity campaign online, whose exposure can make dedicating actions seem like a social norm or a status symbol, pushing some young people to enroll in these activities for the sake of appearances and potraiting oneself flawlessly on virtual world, or to fit in with their peers. Consequently, what teenagers gain after any programs are not moral values or practical skills and sympathy, but instead are unblemished images and presence updated and drew up impractically. It’s doubtlessly perceptible that gaining social validation is on its step taking precedence over genuine passion and enthusiasm

From another perspective, the proclamation above might not reflect the full spectrum of motivations behind youth volunteering. Nowadays, various youngs are energetically invested in causes that resonate with their values, such as environmental sustainability, social justice, or poverty alleviation. The rise of global movements, like climate strikes and social activism, has inspired a new generation of volunteers who are driven by a sense of responsibility and a desire to make tangible change, or in another world, the core incentive that derives from demands of contributing to the world are somewhat instill in a group of teenagers. For instance, Every Child Now, which is a youth-run organization focusing on comprehensive development aid and empowerment projects worldwide, was spearheaded by Vishal and Ishan Villay, and a small group of their peers at just 13 years old, after an inspiring trip to India.

In light of the above, while social trends and external factors may influence some young people to volunteer, this is not the predominant reason for their involvement. Numerous young volunteers are genuinely motivated by a desire to contribute to their communities and make a difference in the world. Thus, it is crucial to recognize that the motivations behind youth volunteering are multifaceted and often blend personal, social, and altruistic factors.
