There is no doubt that excessive time spent at work is significantly increasing, and becoming a worrying challenge today for many people, especially workers and their families. There appear to be two serious problems involved, and some potential solutions, which I will discuss now.
Perhaps the gravest problem stemming from this is the stress that the workers themselves are faced. When a person is working for longer hours, and thinking about work even outside that time, the mental anxiety and physical exhaustion is inevitable because of no relaxation. A further serious issue arising from this is the disruption to family relationships, particularly with a spouse and children. Although more work gives an opportunity to increase someone’s income, it would damaging the natural bonds between families which bind a family together. The long-term consequent problems of family breakdown may include depression, poor self-esteem, and academic underperformance.
Turning to possible remedies, probably the most effective solution is to reduce the pressure of work on employees. This means that the employers would take a viable decision to set a fixed amount of time into their workers’ schedules. For example, companies might follow the ‘no work, phone calls or e-mails after five pm, as is being suggested in Germany at present. A another contributing remedy can be to promote the use of relaxation techniques among workers. If an organisation provides various activities, ranging from sports to yoga or family event, they will be relaxed from their works. This would help to lessen the anxiety of high workloads to some extent.
In conclusion, the main problems seem to be stress and family breakdown. The key solution including increased leisure time, which can help to minimise high workloads
