Many young people all over the world aspire to study at university. However, the number of people dropping out of universities is rising. In this essay, I will give the reasons behind this trend and offer possible solutions to this problem.
One reason behind students increasingly dropping out is financial. Not only do students have to pay large tuition fees, but they also need to pay for accommodation and other living expenses. Students have always had to live on a tight budget, but recent rises in the cost of living have made this problem much worse. Additionally, students today have significantly more distractions than before, namely scrolling through social media. This can lead to students struggling to focus on their academic studies. Poor performance in exams can then result in some students deciding that it is better for them to give up their studies.
One obvious solution is for governments to offer more financial support to students through scholarship programmes, grants or higher student loans. Governments may also look at regulating universities more closely so as to prevent them from increasing tuition fees further. The problem of social media addiction, however, is a far greater concern. Despite efforts to raise awareness of the negative effects social media can have on one’s focus, they have done little to reduce social media usage. This problem is, as far as I am concerned, a problem that students themselves will need to tackle.
In conclusion, financial problems and distractions from social media are the key reasons why more students are giving up on their studies. The financial problem can be tackled by the authorities, but the problems of social media distraction have no clear solution. Preventing further harms of social media is something governments, communities and parents will all need to take seriously going forward.
