In today’s world, the majority of adolescents own personal phones with multi-faceted functions. While some argue that its negative impact on mental health is substantial, others argue that smartphones offer many opportunities in terms of education and communication. I believe that although the drawbacks of phone usage for teenagers should not be overlooked, its benefits far outweigh the potential disadvantages.
On the one hand, with the advent of mobile phones, influencing young minds became straightforward. Due to their inexperience, teenagers are more prone to unquestioningly believe the claims and propaganda online compared to fully developed adults. Hence, people aware of that fact can use that for their own purposes while manipulating the teenage minds. This issue is especially relevant since many adolescents spend worrying amounts of time online. In addition to the potential manipulation, adolescents may fall victim to threats such as cyberbullying, fraud, or unattainable beauty standards that can lead to mental health problems. Recent research conducted by the New York University suggests that over 43% of teenagers have been subjected to mental issues including depression and stress as a consequence of internet exposure.
On the other hand, smartphones are truly beneficial when used accordingly, and its functions regarding information access and communication cannot be overlooked. Phones can assist youngsters in their education by providing them with different sources of information and tutoring opportunities on platforms like YouTube, for example. On top of that, teenagers can communicate with their friends and family regardless of geographical barriers, fostering the sense of connection and close relationships through their phones. This feature is comforting for parents specifically since they can ensure the safety of their child through a simple phone call. Combined, these issues serve beneficial for teenagers through readily available educational resources and the means of communication with loved ones.
In conclusion, while both the advantages and the drawbacks of teenagers’ smartphone usage hold merit, I believe that its benefits including educational support and interconnectedness significantly assist the youngsters in their daily lives. Nevertheless, the threats that internet poses regarding mental health should be mitigated to promote teenagers’ safety on the internet.
