It is argued that some university students believe that learning subjects other than their main field is necessary, whereas others say that focusing only on one qualification is logical. As far as I am concerned, there are both advantages and disadvantages in every situation; for example, learning other subjects can broaden your knowledge, but it can also be overwhelming. On the other hand, specializing in a field transforms you into an expert, but it may also limit your potential. I must admit that I would prefer being busy rather than limiting my potential, so if I were a university student, I’d say that being informed about other subjects makes me feel more satisfied, instead of specializing in only one area.
Firstly, learning other subjects has many opportunities for a university student, such as broadening your horizons. This is because if you are informed about other subjects, your perspective will grow day by day. For example, if a person who studies International Relations wants to take French lessons, she might be more informed about world history through information from French resources. Another possibility is that it can become overwhelming due to the variety of subjects. One reason is that trying to learn too many subjects at once can have negative effects. In my view, if they try to learn too many subjects at once, they might want to quit all at the same time.
Secondly, specializing in a field has several advantages too, such as becoming an expert in a particular area. For example, if such a student only focuses on her current “History of Civilizations” course, she might be an expert in the field of civilizations, but at the same time, it limits her potential as she does not learn other subjects.
To conclude, while some students prefer to study additional subjects different from their current majors, others believe that focusing only on one qualification is more beneficial. It seems to me that they both have advantages and disadvantages, such as broadening their minds or becoming overwhelmed, and in my opinion, broadening your horizons by learning new subjects is more beneficial than sticking to only one subject.
