Opinions diverge on whether sports competitions should be eradicated, as they instill the fear of losing. From my perspective, while sports competitions have some merits, I agree that their drawbacks are more significant and they should be banned.
On the one hand, it is true that sports have a profound impact on individuals. To begin with, competitive sports facilitate the acquisition of fundamental life skills, such as the ability to handle both victory and defeat. In particular, experiencing victory enables individuals to regulate their excitement, helping them maintain objectivity when responding to challenges. Likewise, experiencing defeat can lay the foundations for them to reflect on their mistakes and make improvements, thereby reducing the likelihood of repeating them in the future. Furthermore, sports competitions play an indispensable role in enhancing individuals’ well-being. To clarify, discipline and endurance developed throughout rigorous periods of practicing contribute to their personal and physical development.
On the other hand, despite the aforementioned benefits, I assert that the drawbacks of sports competitions are more pressing for the following reasons. Firstly, the apprehension of failure undermines individuals’ persistence. To elaborate, consistently experiencing defeat causes stress and reduces self-confidence, which may foster the reluctance to pursue other endeavors. This attitude is pernicious, as it can discourage people from striving to achieve their ambitions, potentially preventing them from attaining success in life. Moreover, competitions can foster an unfair sporting environment . To be more specific, for some people, winning takes precedence over integrity and sportsmanship. This often results in unsportsmanlike behaviors, such as cheating or deliberately fouling opponents, which contradicts the positive values that sports are meant to create. As a consequence, such misconduct would undermine fair play and reverberate across the younger generations, instilling the mindset that unethical behaviors are acceptable in both sports and life.
In conclusion, although sports enhance personal development, I believe that sports competitions should be eliminated, as they lead to stress and create an unfair sporting environment.
