Band 7+: Modern technology has increased the gap between rich and poor. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is an ongoing debate about whether modern technology is widening the gap between the rich and the poor. I firmly agree that technology has contributed to social inequality, as its benefits are not equally accessible to all.

One major reason technology increases social inequality is the educational gap it creates. Wealthier students have access to online learning platforms, digital tools, and private tutoring, while students from lower-income families often struggle with limited internet access and lack of devices. For instance, during the pandemic, students in affluent areas could continue learning through virtual classes, whereas many students in rural regions fell behind.

Technology has also reinforced economic inequality in the workplace. High-paying jobs in IT, digital marketing, and tech-based industries require digital literacy and resources that only some people can afford to acquire. Many multinational companies rely on technology-driven operations, which benefits skilled professionals, leaving low-skilled workers with fewer opportunities for advancement

Additionally, modern technology has improved healthcare, but mostly for higher-income groups. Telemedicine, advanced diagnostics, and health apps are widely available in urban areas and private hospitals, while rural and poorer populations have limited access. This disparity shows how technological advancements often favor those who are already privileged

In conclusion, while technology has the potential to improve lives, it currently contributes to social inequality because access to its benefits is uneven. Policymakers should ensure that technological resources are more widely available to bridge the gap between different social classes.
