Band 9: Money offered for postgraduate research is limited; as a consequence, some people argue that financial support from the government should only be provided for scientific research rather than research for less useful subjects. Do you agree or disagree?

It is often argued that, since funding for postgraduate studies is limited, governments should allocate resources exclusively to scientific research rather than to disciplines considered less practical. While I acknowledge the undeniable importance of science in driving progress, I firmly believe that restricting financial aid solely to scientific fields would be both short-sighted and detrimental to society as a whole.

On the one hand, prioritising scientific research is justifiable because of its tangible benefits to humanity. Medical studies, for example, contribute directly to public health by producing vaccines and life-saving treatments. Similarly, research in technology and engineering fuels economic development and enhances living standards through innovations in transportation, energy, and communication. Since such advancements address pressing global challenges like climate change and pandemics, some people argue that public money is best spent on these areas where measurable outcomes can be achieved.

On the other hand, non-scientific disciplines are by no means “less useful” and deserve equal recognition and financial support. Fields such as education, linguistics, and history play a vital role in shaping cultural identity, promoting social cohesion, and fostering critical thinking. For instance, research in psychology and sociology is crucial for understanding human behaviour, which in turn informs effective policies in crime prevention, mental health, and social welfare. Likewise, studies in the arts and humanities enrich societies by preserving traditions, inspiring creativity, and ensuring that ethical considerations accompany scientific progress. To ignore these contributions is to risk creating a society that is technologically advanced but culturally impoverished.

Furthermore, restricting government support to science alone could widen inequalities between disciplines and discourage talented individuals from pursuing research in non-scientific fields. Such an approach might result in a narrow, utilitarian view of education, reducing diversity in academic inquiry and stifling innovation that often emerges at the intersection of science and the humanities.

In conclusion, although scientific research undoubtedly merits substantial government investment, I strongly disagree with the notion that it should be funded at the expense of other disciplines. A balanced approach, in which both sciences and humanities receive adequate financial support, is essential for the holistic development of societies.
