Most people think that money spent on space exploration is a complete waste and should instead be allocated to areas that directly benefit the nation. I predominantly agree with this view and the primary purpose of this monograph is to illustrate my position with relevant examples.
To begin with, it is important to acknowledge the opposing perspective, which suggests that investment in space exploration has led to some technological advancements. Proponents argue that rather than focusing solely on immediate returns, space research can foster innovations that may eventually benefit humanity. However, these benefits are relatively minor compared to the urgent needs faced by populations worldwide. Therefore, these technological benefits often come at an enormous cost.
Nevertheless, a more compelling argument is that the redirecting these funds toward immediate and pressing issues such as poverty, healthcare, and education. Investment in sectors such as renewable energy and precious metals could yield far more tangible benefits. Moreover, by supporting industries that directly impact people’s lives, governments can also stimulate economic growth, promote infrastructure development, attract investment from different countries, and create employment opportunities. In conclusion, although space exploration may hold potential future benefits, I am largely in favor of reallocating resources toward other things, such as exploration in precious metals due to its immediate economic impact and its ability to deliver widespread improvements to society. In addition, governments have a responsibility to prioritize the immediate needs of their citizens over the pursuit of distant, and often uncertain, scientific goals.
