Band 9: more and more children from wealth countries are doing unpaid work in poor countries, such as teaching building house elcetera. why are they doing this? who gets more benefit, the community or the young people?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The significance of young people from affluent countries engaging in voluntary work in underdeveloped regions has long been debated. With the rapid expansion of global connectivity, this practice has sparked increasing controversy. Some argue that such experiences are immensely beneficial for the volunteers, while others stress the positive impact on the local communities. The profound effects of this trend raise ongoing questions about who gains the most from it. In my view, the communities benefit more. This essay will explore my stance, highlighting both positive and negative implications, and will conclude with a well-reasoned judgment.

The primary reason supporting the viewpoint that the community benefits more is the direct improvement in local infrastructure and services. This is evident from the construction of schools, homes, and medical facilities, which are crucial for underprivileged populations. Additionally, another significant advantage is the transfer of knowledge and skills, as these young volunteers often teach or provide vocational training to locals, which clearly underscores the lasting benefits of this trend. Moreover, the volunteers’ work often fosters economic growth, as improved infrastructure leads to better opportunities for local businesses. For instance, a small village that receives a newly built school by volunteers can experience long-term educational and economic improvements.

However, another key factor supporting my view is that the experience is undeniably valuable for the young volunteers as well. This is largely due to the personal growth and broader worldview they develop, which highlights the self-development aspect. Furthermore, volunteering in disadvantaged areas fosters empathy, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of global inequalities, adding complexity to the debate. Beyond these reasons, it becomes evident why some believe that young people benefit significantly from such experiences. Nevertheless, while personal development is important, the tangible improvements in community welfare present a more substantial long-term impact.

In conclusion, after considering the arguments presented, it is clear that the advantages for the local community, such as enhanced infrastructure and knowledge transfer, are too significant to overlook. Therefore, I firmly believe that the community reaps greater benefits from these volunteer efforts, representing the more rational viewpoint.
