Nowadays, more cities are encouraging people to use public transportation instead of using private vehicles. There are advantages and disadvantages of this public policy. Therefore, this article discusses both sides of the approach.
Initially, one of the advantages is people will easily meet each other because of public transportations. The reason why using public transportations brings more benefits, because it connects many places with the cheaper price rather than buying a new vehicle. Moreover, if the use of public transportations increases, the use of private vehicles reduces. As a result, air pollution will decrease and improve air quality in cities. For example, Singapore has restricted the use of private vehicles since the 1980s and the air quality gradually improves. Thus, the use of public transportations may increase the quality of life for people to be more connected and improve the city’s air quality.
However, on the economy side, public transportations need a huge budget at the first development of its infrastructure. It is obvious that the tax income will rise. Furthermore, the risk of crime in the public facilities, especially transportations will rise. The crime such as pickpocketing, sexual harassment, and physical offending. For example, sexual harassment on public transportation always occur in Tokyo every year.
In conclusion, the encouragement of the use of public transportation brings advantages and disadvantages such as the potential of people to be more connected, the air quality in cities will improve, the huge number of government budgets, and the risk of criminal cases in public transportation in the future.
