Band 5+: More people are moving into mega-cities with a 20 million population. Is this a negative or positive development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the rapid increase in population, the consumption of natural resources such as oil, forests, and freshwater has been diminished, and this results in the negative impacts to environment as well as society. However, these issues can be tackled and in this essay, I will discuss and provide some reasonable solutions to solve them.

First, the over-consumption of oil and forests causes environmental problems. People have been depending on fossil fuel and activities from oil negatively affect the environment like running a factory or converting oil into gasoline for vehicles. Leading to a huge amount of carbon emissions produced into the atmosphere. Moreover, chopping down trees causes deforestation which limits the number of trees to progress carbon from fuels to oxygen, and minimizes the storage for carbon. These lead to air pollution in countries and also the main cause of global warming.

Second, the scarcity in the amount of freshwater is also a significant concern. At best, when clean water is out of use and the progress of recycling water does not meet the need, humans will try to utilize water from oceans and rivers instead. This leads to the spreading of disease widely because of the water contamination from the resource that contains germs and bacteria like rivers or streams. At worst, citizens will start to fight over each others to have freshwater to use, this causes conflict and chaos in the communities.

However, I believe that there are some potential ways to solve these problems. The government can introduce a new law that prevents individuals and companies from using oil and discharging it into the environment. As well as limited the amount of trees that can be chopped down every year and strongly punish those who disobey. Additionally, it also a crucial part to incentivize citizens cutting down their daily use of water, try to minimize it as possible to maintain the resources.

In conclusion, it is true that our natural resources have been threated and the outcome has diminished the environment’s quality. Nevertheless, they can be tackled by making new laws, encouraging and rewarding the public.
