More tourism would have a negative impact on the planet.

As travel becomes increasingly accessible, the expansion of tourism raises important questions about its true effects. Although it offers certain benefits, the negative consequences are often more serious.

(+) One major advantage of tourism is that it provides jobs and improves local infrastructure. When tourists visit, there is a greater need for hotels, restaurants, and transportation, leading to the creation of employment opportunities for local people. In addition, authorities are often motivated to build better roads, airports, and hospitals, which continue to serve the local population even after tourists leave. Another benefit is that tourism brings valuable income to poorer countries. Money spent by visitors supports small businesses, such as family-run cafes and souvenir shops, helping entire communities to improve their living standards. Furthermore, tourism helps to keep traditions alive. Many communities maintain ancient crafts, dances, and festivals specifically because they attract visitors. Without tourism, these practices might disappear due to modernisation. For instance, in Mexico, traditional Day of the Dead celebrations have gained international recognition partly because of tourist interest, which has encouraged local people to preserve their customs.

(–) However, the disadvantages are difficult to overlook. Firstly, tourism causes serious damage to the environment. The construction of hotels, resorts, and entertainment facilities often leads to deforestation, pollution of beaches, and the destruction of wildlife habitats. In Kenya, for example, excessive safari tourism has disrupted natural ecosystems, putting stress on animal populations. Secondly, the increase in air travel dramatically worsens the climate crisis. Planes emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, contributing to global warming and environmental degradation. Finally, tourism threatens local cultures by forcing communities to alter their traditions for commercial purposes. Instead of practicing customs naturally, they are sometimes staged in a way that pleases tourists but loses the original meaning and spiritual value.

In conclusion, although tourism can stimulate economies and preserve cultural heritage, its negative effects on the environment and traditional societies must be carefully managed to prevent irreversible harm.
