It is argued that youngsters should be encouraged to acquire technical skills, while most college students prefer academic education. I completely agree that students at the college level should be encouraged to gain hands-on practical skills alongside their academic studies.
There are a number of reasons why I believe college students need to focus on gaining vocational skills. One reason is that the world is undergoing a major industrial shift due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). AI has advanced beyond what many people could have imagined. It is capable of solving complex problems, writing code, generating images and videos, and performing many other tasks. As a result, it is replacing certain jobs in the technology sector that previously required hours or even days to complete, as AI can now accomplish them within minutes. For example, major technology companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter have laid off thousands of employees in recent years. Therefore, if a student becomes skilled in a trade such as plumbing or construction, it will help them adapt to the changing job market, as these occupations are far less likely to be replaced by artificial intelligence.
In addition, although academic studies should remain a student’s main priority, learning vocational skills can help students become more self-sufficient and financially independent. They can earn extra income while studying and use it to support their educational expenses, giving them greater financial security and peace of mind. Moreover, they can assist their parents, fulfil their personal goals, and cover their living expenses. For instance, a student studying abroad often needs a significant amount of money to continue their education. In such a situation, if they already possess practical skills, they can earn a decent income that at least covers their living costs and helps pay part of their tuition fees.
In conclusion, considering the factors discussed above, I believe that students should be encouraged to acquire vocational skills, even though most of them choose academic studies.
