Using artificial intelligence to make important decisions is becoming an increasingly popular trend worldwide. While AI offers a range of benefits, such as insightful guidance on unfamiliar topics, drawbacks emerge from overreliance on its judgments, namely trusting misinformation gathered by AI models from the internet. Nevertheless, its advantages slightly outweigh the disadvantages, despite the inherent drawbacks.
Overreliance on artificial intelligence to make pivotal life choices sidelines people’s own decision-making skills. As AI chatbots offer nearly instant responses and use scientific research in their reasoning, many individuals feel compelled to forgo their own analysis completely. However, despite their sophisticated analysis, many AI models are influenced by misinformation on the internet, leading to crucial errors in their judgement. For instance, if a malicious actor were to start a misinformation campaign to trick people into investing in a non-existent company with large returns, some AI chatbots would pick up this information and present it as a brilliant opportunity. Thus, while artificial intelligence remains an excellent tool for research, its analysis is susceptible to errors, making it unsuitable as a sole decision-maker.
Conversely, AI models serve as a primary source of information for a growing number of people worldwide, providing valuable insight for decision-making. Given their excellent ability to gather and synthesize information from various sources, AI chatbots supply their users with balanced information, largely without bias. While highly educated individuals are capable of making informed decisions on their own, some people benefit substantially from partially delegating their decision-making to AI models, as their reasoning may prove superior to their users’ despite the risk of severe errors. For example, the average user, seeking medical advice from artificial intelligence, would receive generally sophisticated advice, which would increase the probability of them seeking professional help. Hence, AI models’ advice, while somewhat inaccurate, might point an uninformed user in the right direction.
To sum up, the increasing use of artificial intelligence for decision-making is an emerging global trend, which offers tangible benefits to users, provided they do not rely solely on AI judgments. While AI responses might contain serious errors, cautious use of the technology as a tool remains highly advantageous.
