Band 8+: Nowadays, children watch a lot of TV and play video games. However, some think that these activities are not beneficial for a child's mental health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the digital age, children spend an increasing amount of time watching television and playing computer games. Some argue that this trend negatively affects their mental abilities. I partly agree with this view, as excessive screen time can impair cognitive development, although moderate use may still offer certain benefits.

On the one hand, spending excessive hours in front of screens can reduce children’s concentration and critical thinking skills. When children become addicted to online games, they may struggle to focus on academic tasks or engage in meaningful social interactions. Moreover, prolonged screen exposure can lead to sedentary lifestyles and limited real-world experiences, both of which are essential for intellectual growth. As a result, their problem-solving abilities and communication skills may gradually deteriorate.

On the other hand, it would be unfair to claim that screen time is entirely harmful. When used in moderation and under parental supervision, educational programs and certain video games can stimulate creativity, improve strategic thinking, and enhance hand-eye coordination. Additionally, online entertainment can serve as a stress reliever after long hours of studying, helping children maintain emotional balance.

In conclusion, while excessive screen time can indeed have detrimental effects on children’s mental abilities, controlled and purposeful use of digital media may contribute positively to their development.
