It has been observed that by prioritizing economic development, many countries are facing the loss of several important social values. Although I reckon the prosperity derived from a thriving economy, I believe that this is far outweighed by significant disadvantages.
Admittedly, some arguing that living standards could be improved thanks to a wealthy economy may base their position on compelling arguments. Chief among them is that such an economy often goes with higher salaries and wages, thus improving the financial stability of households and allowing residents to enjoy a more comfortable life. This is because businesses are facilitated with an appropriate condition to thrive and generate lucrative revenue; thereby, their employees receive better compensation. Furthermore, with a developed economy, the governments have more tax revenue to invest in public services such as healthcare, education, facilities, transportation, and public safety, leading to a better quality of infrastructure and services for residents.
On the other hand, despite the aforementioned benefits, I firmly believe that these should not come at the price of other social factors such as the environment and social equality. Regarding the former, due to urbanization and industrialization, many forests are being cleared for agricultural and industrial purposes, which deprives not only residents of fresh air to breathe but also wild animals of a home to live in. As a consequence, this causes the ecosystem to suffer from imbalances and become more vulnerable. Beyond that, income inequality can be exacerbated as some regions could benefit greatly but others may be left behind, leading to social tensions and disparities in access to resources and opportunities. For example, countries often concentrate on promoting economic development in favorable regions, such as coastal or delta areas, making these regions more flourishing compared to mountainous or remote ones.
In conclusion, while a thriving economy can lead to improved living standards and better public services, the environmental degradation and loss of social values that often accompany economic growth present significant disadvantages. Therefore, it is crucial to strive for a balance between economic development and the preservation of social values to ensure a more sustainable life.
